Cross Country 2015-2016
Saturday 7 November – Epsom Downs / Esher – Race Report
The men’s Division 3 team were at Epsom Downs for the second cross country of the season. Heavy rain meant that the going was tough. 16 competed, of which 9 were from Oxted Runners. The first Oxted Runner (and third for the team) was Jeremy Carter, who put in a strong finish to pass Andy Irons in the final furlong! Followed shortly after by Zhan Su, Pete Gibson, debutants Chris Wilson and Philip Clarkson, Daniel Cundill and finally Pat Sullivan. The team came joint 6th out of 9 teams. Well done to everyone on an excellent result!
The men’s team are currently 7th in the league and have an excellent chance of avoiding relegation, which would be their best result in recent years. The team has benefitted hugely from the large turnout this season, and everyone is encouraged to join the next match on 16th January.
Well done to the six ladies who braved the awful weather conditions for the second cross country at Esher. It was a really blustery day with the rain teeming down all morning, thus guaranteeing very wet muddy conditions. The race commenced with a quick circuit of the park, before it entered the woods via a narrow footbridge, slowing us all down before we even got warmed up!
The course was made up of a short lap through the woods, followed by a second longer lap. First home in position 121 was Maggie Berry in a time of 30:16, followed by Sylvie Green, Francis Gibson, Wendy Wilson, Kim Sullivan and Doriena Koldenhof, who was competing in her first ever cross country race.
A great effort by everyone, especially considering the conditions, had the team finishing again in 15th position, this time out of 37 teams.
Saturday 10 October – Tadworth / Collingwoood in North Park – Race Report
The first cross country of the season was at Roundshaw Common.
We had a great start for the newly promoted men’s team with a fantastic 15 runners taking part in the first race. Josh Knight was first home in an amazing 7th position. Well done to the whole team, they finished the race in 7th place out of 9 teams.
Roundshaw was the first ladies event of the 2015-16 season and we had smaller turnout than usual of only 6 ladies. It was a good introduction to the season though as it was a flat 6k course and mud free, which can only be a bonus, particularly for our new cross country participant, Kim Sullivan.
The finishing positions for the team out of 423 runners were: Maggie Berry 122; Sylvie Green 219; Frances Gibson 259; Kim Sullivan 319; Jane McTaggart 325; and Catherine Clifton 378.
Congratulations to the team who finished in a respectable position, 15th out of 39.
