Woldingham Marathon – Sunday 28th August 2016

Home / Woldingham Marathon – Sunday 28th August 2016

Well done to Claire Sells who completed the Marathon in a time of 6:04:51. A very tough and challenging two lap course around the North Downs and Woldingham School. If anybody is interested for next year there is also a Half Marathon option.

Claire has written a piece about her day which makes interesting reading, it could just tempt you to try it for yourself.

Woldingham Half and Full Marathon

Woldingham School opened up their grounds on Sunday 28 August for the very first Woldingham Half and Full Marathon. It was organised by Gareth Davies, he also organises the Vanguard way and Richmond Park Marathons, so we were in good hands. Both runs began at 09:30, after a photo on the steps of the School, just like all those school photos from years ago! There was just over 100 people taking part in both events with a 50/50 split. They were a nice bunch of people with lots of 100 Marathon Clubbers but all willing to give a bit of encouragement or advise. We even had Ruby the dog who appears on the results list.

The course was billed as ‘a delightful trail run in and around the rolling landscape of Woldingham’ well, we from Oxted Runners know better than that, it was hilly and more hilly with over 3000 feet of climb. But as always the scenery was superb as we navigated our way around the course. Self-navigation is not my strong point but some well placed tape in the trees helped immensely, and I managed not to get lost. The weather was perfect, some sunshine, some showers and coolish temperatures.

The marathon was a two lap course and on passing the finish line for the half marathon it got a bit lonely. I did eventually catch up with one lady and we chatted for most of the second lap. There were aid stations aplenty, with the usual fare and cake too (I ate a lot of that). I managed to get round in about 6 hours and received a medal and t-shirt, and, if all’s well, I will probably enter again next year.

Luckily it was the August bank holiday weekend, so I had an extra day off on the Monday to recover!

P.S. Ruby the dog was faster than me!!

Before and after photos. Bet you can’t tell which is which.

Cheers Claire xx
